How Take-Home Pay Is Calculated

Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to $176,100), Medicare (1.45%), state income tax, and any pre-tax deductions. For 2026, the standard deduction is $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for married filing jointly, which significantly reduces your federal taxable income.

2026 Federal Tax Brackets

The 2026 brackets start at 10% on income up to $11,925 (single), rising progressively through 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. Most middle-income workers fall in the 22% marginal bracket but their effective rate is much lower — typically 12–16% — because lower income portions are taxed at lower rates.

Maximizing Your Take-Home Pay

Contributing to a traditional 401k, HSA, or FSA reduces taxable income and thus withholding. A $6,000 annual 401k contribution in the 22% bracket saves $1,320 in federal taxes alone, so the real out-of-pocket cost is only $4,680. State tax savings add additional benefit in most states.
