US Income Distribution
Income in the United States is distributed unevenly. The median individual full-time worker earns approximately $59,228/year, but the average is higher due to very high incomes at the top pulling the mean up. The top 10% earn over $130,000; the top 1% earn over $600,000 annually.
Why Percentile Matters More Than Raw Income
A $75,000 salary means very different things in different cities. In rural Mississippi it places you near the top 20%; in San Francisco or Manhattan it is close to median for the area. Adjusting for cost of living provides a more accurate picture of your relative financial position.
Income by Age and Education
Median earnings rise significantly with education: high school diploma ~$42,000, bachelor's degree ~$72,000, master's degree ~$85,000, professional degrees over $100,000. Age also matters -- peak earnings typically occur between ages 45-54 for most professions before leveling off near retirement.
